Mass culture often distorts or stereotypes certain communities, shaping public perception in ways that overlook their depth and authenticity.
The ask was to explore a subculture often stereotyped in mainstream culture and bring their true story to life. Through thoughtful research and storytelling, the goal was to challenge assumptions and present a more accurate, humanized perspective.
Extreme Body Modifiers
“Woah, that is terrifying.”
We chose to examine extreme body modification because it challenges perceptions of self-expression in a world that often enforces conformity. By immersing ourselves in this subculture, we sought to understand the people behind these modifications and share their real stories.
How I Found the Real Story
I interviewed seven extreme body modifiers I met through a Facebook group. I conducted man-on-the-street interviews, showing photos of extreme body modifications to gauge how the public perceived this community. I attended 2 tattoo conventions where I met several extreme body modifiers and observed how they connect with others in their community.
Check out my video for a closer look at the real stories behind extreme body modifiers.
